A small beginner group for adults and teenagers.
Perhaps for years. You've watched videos, driven past a dojo, wondered what training is really like. You don't start with contact. You start with a small group of other beginners, and you build step by step.
KYOKUSHIN · THE ULTIMATE TRUTH
Kyokushin Karate

Kyokushin is a full-contact style. Beginners start with no-contact partner drills and build toward kumite at their own pace.
Our beginner course is built to answer those questions by doing, not by explaining.
What actually happens in a class?
Will I fit in?
Can I really do this?
Is karate what I think it is?
Kumite is partner training. You choose when to take each step, and you won't be asked to take one before you're ready. Either partner can say "lighter" or "stop" at any time, and it's treated as normal.
Set attacks and responses with pads and mitts.
FIRST CONTACT
Body only, at an intensity you agree beforehand.
FIRST CONTACT
Rounds with rules, supervision and protective gear.
LATER · SEEN BY DEMONSTRATION
Regular class, for students who have chosen it. Competition is optional, and comes later.
LATER · YOUR CHOICE
It's your first class, and the first rung on our contact ladder, which involves no contact at all.
Most schools place a beginner into a class that already exists. Here, everyone in the course starts together, learns together and moves forward together: four weekly lessons with the same instructor each week, then two more inside the regular class so the group joins the dojo as a group.
Revisit the last lesson first. You'll remember more than you think.
One new movement or idea.
See how it fits into kata and kumite.
Use it with another person, at the right rung of the ladder.
By the end of week four you'll know the etiquette, the basic techniques and the start of your first kata, and you'll have trained safely with a partner.
If you'd just like to look around, message us and we'll arrange a visit.
The Black Swan Dojo is part of Matsushima Kyokushin Australia (MKA).
Kyokushin was founded by Mas Oyama in Japan in the 1950s. The word means "ultimate truth". It's known for knockdown karate: full-contact sparring with no protective gear in competition, and a strong emphasis on conditioning and character.
Training has three parts: kihon (basics), kata (forms) and kumite (partner training and sparring), with a belt system marked by formal gradings.
Most parents aren't searching for karate. They're searching for confidence, structure, good role models and a community. We want you to know exactly what full-contact means here before you decide.
