A small beginner group for adults and teenagers. Start together, build step by step.
Maybe you’ve thought about karate before.
Perhaps for years. You’ve watched videos, driven past a dojo, wondered what training is really like.
The Black Swan Dojo teaches Kyokushin, a full-contact style. You don’t start with contact. You start with a small group of other beginners, and you build step by step.
Small groups, precision instruction, zero intimidation.
Beginners start with no-contact partner drills and build toward kumite at their own pace.
Most people don’t wait because they can’t do it. They wait because they aren’t sure.
Our beginner course is built to answer those questions by doing, not by explaining.
It’s your first class, and the first rung on our contact ladder, which involves no contact at all.
Most schools place a beginner into a class that already exists. Here, everyone in the course starts together, learns together and moves forward together.
Four weekly lessons with the same instructor each week, then two more inside the regular class so the group joins the dojo as a group.
Each lesson reviews what you learned last time, adds one new idea, and puts it to use safely with a partner. By week four, you know etiquette, basics, and your first kata.
Kumite is partner training. You choose when to take each step, and you won’t be asked to take one before you’re ready. Either partner can say “lighter” or “stop” at any time, and it’s treated as normal.
Drills with no contact. Perfect for learning stance, movement, and distance control.
Set attacks and responses with heavy bags, focus mitts, and striking pads.
Body only, at an intensity you and your partner agree on beforehand.
Rounds with rules, supervision, and protective gear. Full-contact kumite comes later in regular classes.
First Contact covers the first two rungs. You’ll see the third demonstrated by senior students.
If you’d just like to look around, a walk-in visit is possible: (Free, no commitment, contact us to arrange your visit).
Kyokushin was founded by Mas Oyama in Japan in the 1950s. The word means “ultimate truth”. It’s known for knockdown karate: full-contact sparring with no protective gear in competition, and a strong emphasis on conditioning and character.
Training has three parts: kihon (basics), kata (forms) and kumite (partner training and sparring), with a belt system marked by formal gradings.

Considering Kyokushin for your teenager? Most parents aren’t searching for karate. They’re searching for confidence, structure, good role models and a community. We want you to know exactly what full-contact means here before you decide.
